Tracked Spider Lift vs. Towable Boom Lift: What Buyers Should Verify

Two Chinese suppliers advertise a “Spider Lift” with similar working heights, yet the prices differ sharply. The cheaper machine also has four hydraulic outriggers and looks like a spider lift. Is it worth buying?

Do not compare prices yet. The quotations may describe different equipment categories: a self-propelled tracked spider lift and a wheeled towable boom lift.

Some sellers use descriptions such as “Towable Spider Lift”. A product name is not a reliable selection criterion. Establish the chassis, travel arrangement and exact model first. Then assess access, reach to the work position and whether the prices are comparable.

1. Four outriggers do not identify the equipment category

In this article, a tracked spider lift, also described as a compact crawler boom lift, has a self-propelled tracked chassis. A towable or trailer-mounted boom lift has a trailer chassis and towing connection.

Both categories may use articulated booms and hydraulic outriggers. Look at the more direct distinctions below.

ComparisonTracked spider liftTowable / trailer-mounted boom lift
ChassisTracks and their travel systemWheels, trailer chassis and towing connection
Movement on siteSelf-propelled within model-specific conditionsUsually towed; some models have an auxiliary drive system
Longer-distance relocationUsually requires a suitable transport vehicleCheck the towing vehicle, connection and local road-use requirements
AccessVerify track and overall widths and whether narrowing is permittedVerify axle, track width, drawbar and turning space
Set-up for workCheck permitted outrigger layouts, support conditions and working envelopeThe same checks are needed; “simpler construction” is not a reason to omit them

Self-propelled movement alone is not a definitive distinction. The official Genie TZ-50 product page, for example, lists an optional Drive and Set function, with use conditions that include the machine being fully lowered. An auxiliary drive does not make a trailer-mounted machine equivalent to a tracked spider lift.

Similarly, tracks do not make a machine suitable for every soft-ground site, and a towing connection does not establish compliance with destination road-use requirements. Confirm both against the specific model and location.

2. Similar heights can conceal an access constraint that rules out one option

JOVOO’s Chinese website publishes separate specifications for spider and towable machines. Consider two models with similar working heights:

See the guide to spider lift setup space for the relevant checks.

ParameterTracked S16CTowable T16Li
Maximum working height17.7 m17.85 m
Width stated on manufacturer’s website0.85 m1.60 m
Machine weight2,200 kg1,980 kg

Sources: JOVOO spider-lift table and towable-lift table, accessed for the source manuscript on 23 October 2026. The S16C field is labelled “overall machine width”; the T16Li field specifies “overall machine width—stowed”. Neither page identifies a complete specification revision. Obtain written confirmation of the actual access configuration.

Suppose the site’s only entrance has a clear width of 1.20 m. On the published dimensions, the T16Li does not fit in the stated stowed configuration. The S16C passes this initial width screen, but height, turning space, ground conditions and clearance still need checking.

This is not a quality ranking. A site requirement has eliminated one option. A lower price, lighter weight or slightly greater height cannot compensate for a machine that cannot enter the work area.

Continue with another question: once inside, is there enough space to deploy the outriggers and do the job? Reaching the site and operating safely there are different assessments.

3. Tie the quotation to a specific model, not a promotional image

Tracks, drive systems, power sources and controls affect the cost structure. Some simpler towable configurations may cost less than tracked machines, but the actual difference can only be assessed with model, configuration and delivery terms defined.

The warning sign is a mismatch between information: a webpage shows a tracked machine while the low price offered by the salesperson belongs to a towable model; or the photograph shows another configuration without the quotation explaining the difference.

Start by asking:

Are you quoting a self-propelled tracked spider lift or a towable, trailer-mounted boom lift? Please send photos of the exact model and configuration covered by your quotation.

Then check three connections: photographs to model, model to specification sheet, and specification sheet to formal quotation.

Photographs and video should show the chassis, tracks or wheels, towing connection, outriggers and nameplate—not just the raised boom. Before production, a same-model reference machine can be used if clearly identified as such. After completion, verify the machine actually allocated to your order.

What should buyers make of quality complaints about low-priced towable machines?

In Levantis’s customer conversations, some buyers have reported workmanship or in-use quality problems with low-priced towable equipment they purchased. This is limited customer feedback, not independent failure-rate data, and it is not an allegation about the manufacturers mentioned in this article.

The useful response is to turn concerns into checks for this order: assembly condition, functional test records, agreed configuration, parts information and after-sales responsibilities. It is not a basis for declaring the entire towable category unreliable.

Where a towable machine genuinely suits the site, assess it as a separate solution. A lower price does not make it an equivalent substitute for a tracked spider lift.

4. What traceable supply leads are available in China?

The number of online sellers advertising spider lifts does not establish the number of actual manufacturers. Start a shortlist with published product ranges and manufacturing or delivery records, then verify the proposed order.

Company and public materialWhat the material establishesWhat still needs checking for purchase
JOVOO: separate spider and towable tables; spider specifications list working heights of 10, 12, 14, 15.7 and 17.7 mPublic product information covering several heights and chassis categoriesOffered model and configuration, actual production location and delivery quality
Hubei Goman: Chinese website lists models including X18, X26 and X36, with published working heights of 18.2, 26 and 36 m respectivelyPublicly offered ranges in China span more than one height bandConsistency between the quoted version and technical information; suitability of the intended configuration
SINOBOOM: a company report dated 29 January 2024 describes a batch shipment of spider lifts and mentions SPA33HJCompany-published evidence of development, manufacturing and dispatch activityCurrent supply version, lead time, document applicability and inspection arrangements for this order

Sources: JOVOO product table, Goman’s Chinese product range and SINOBOOM’s dispatch report. These are supply leads, not a complete manufacturer directory, quality ranking or recommendation list.

A catalogue helps shortlist models. It does not demonstrate a height segment’s market share or verify the manufacturing relationship for your order. Do not substitute a claim about the “mainstream height” for the actual job: establish the target position and load, then select candidates.

Where language versions of the same company’s website give conflicting specifications, request a dated technical confirmation identifying model and configuration. Do not choose the more attractive figure yourself.

5. With so many sellers, how do you identify the actual manufacturer?

Separate three roles: who manufactures, who contracts and who provides after-sales support. They may be the same company or different parties. The relationships and responsibilities must be explainable, recorded and verifiable.

Request the manufacturer’s full legal name, production address and information tied to the proposed model. The nameplate, specification sheet, operator’s manual and contract attachments should correspond. Where sales brands or model designations differ, obtain an explicit cross-reference.

For OEM or trading-company sales, establish the relationship with the manufacturer rather than assuming that the sales brand identifies the production factory. Similar appearance does not prove that two machines come from the same factory. A workshop photograph does not establish that the proposed model is made there.

Machine videos, assembly records and test records provide leads. For higher-risk orders, consider on-site work with clearly defined verification objectives, using the supplier identity and manufacturing relationship guide.

After-sales arrangements must also be model-specific: who receives a fault report, how parts are identified, which manuals are available and who pays which costs. “Contact me if there is a problem” is not an adequate service agreement.

6. Once the category is clear, compare the parameters that affect the decision

CheckWhat the supplier needs to answer
Working envelope and loadCan the platform reach the required height and horizontal distance with the total load of people, tools and materials?
Access and stowed dimensionsIn what configuration were dimensions measured? Is removal or folding of guardrails or components, or track narrowing, involved?
Outrigger layoutWhich layouts are permitted? How much space does each need, and does it restrict the working envelope?
Weight and supportWhat are the weight and necessary support data for this configuration? Which site conditions remain to be assessed?
Power and controlsWhich batteries, engines, power connections, controls and options are included?
Delivery and after-salesWhich documents, checks, spares and warranty responsibilities are already included in the offer?

Do not assume maximum working height, maximum horizontal outreach and maximum platform capacity are simultaneously available. Ask the supplier to mark the required position on the working-envelope chart for the exact model and load, identifying the outrigger layout and other limitations.

Complex sites also require assessment of support, ground and working space against actual conditions. A purchasing comparison sheet identifies questions and gathers evidence; it does not replace the manufacturer’s technical confirmation or a necessary site engineering assessment.

7. A short quotation-confirmation template

This template is for buyers who have established that they need a tracked machine. If the category is undecided, first describe the site and task and ask the supplier to explain the alternatives separately.

Subject: RFQ — Tracked Spider Lift for [Application / Destination]

Dear Sales Team,

We are looking for a tracked spider lift for [application and destination country]. Our required work position, access dimensions and expected platform load are shown in the attached notes.

Please confirm that the quoted machine has a self-propelled tracked chassis. Quote any towable or trailer-mounted alternative separately and explain the differences.

Please provide:

1. The actual manufacturer, exact model and configuration, with photos showing the chassis, outriggers and nameplate. Identify any photos of reference machines rather than our order.

2. The working-envelope chart and load limits for the offered configuration.

3. Stowed dimensions, the configuration in which they are measured, permitted outrigger layouts, machine weight and relevant support data.

4. Included power and control equipment, technical documents, warranty and spare-parts arrangements.

5. Price, delivery term and named place, lead time, and any requirements you cannot yet confirm.

Please highlight any differences between the advertised machine and the quotation.

Best regards,

[Name / Company]

Both tracked and towable machines can be reasonable choices. The mistake to avoid is deciding from the pictures and applications of one category, then paying for a machine from another.

Unsure whether your spider lift quotations are comparable?

Send Levantis the quotations, model details or product photographs, together with the destination country, work position and access conditions. We can help identify the equipment category, organize configuration differences, check manufacturing sources and follow up on unresolved questions.

Incomplete information is enough to begin. The first step is identifying what could change the purchase decision.
